FIFA World Cup-winning Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon is set to visit Nepal. Buffon, the former captain of Italy and one of the greatest goalkeepers in football history, will be coming to Nepal for the KP Oli Cup football tournament. Nepal Youth Association President Kshitiz Thebe confirmed that Buffon’s visit has been finalized.
The third edition of the KP Oli Cup will take place from Falgun 11 to 19 (February 23 to March 3). According to Thebe, Buffon will arrive in Kathmandu during the final match of the tournament. Initially, there were plans to bring Brazilian football stars like Ronaldinho and Roberto Carlos, but after they were unable to attend, the organizers decided to invite Buffon instead, as confirmed by National Youth Association Secretary Niroj Paudel.
According to President Thebe, an agreement has already been signed to bring Buffon to Nepal. If he arrives, he will be one of the biggest football names to ever visit the country. Buffon, who won the 2006 FIFA World Cup with Italy, holds a record of 176 international appearances, making him the goalkeeper with the most international matches played. He also captained the Italian national team in 80 matches.
Buffon played in five consecutive World Cups from 1998 to 2014. The third edition of the KP Oli Cup will feature two foreign teams. The quarter-final matches will be held at the ANFA Complex in Satdobato, while the semi-finals and final will take place at Dasharath Stadium, according to Secretary Niroj Paudel. Buffon is expected to arrive in Nepal on Falgun 17 (March 1) and will watch the final match at Dasharath Stadium.
