DHAKA: Sunday’s violence in Bangladesh claimed almost 100 lives as clashes between protestors calling for Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation and members of the ruling party worsened.
According to media reports, the government has implemented an indefinite statewide curfew and halted mobile internet access in reaction to the growing discontent.The fresh round of fighting started when supporters of the Awami League and demonstrators engaged in a non-cooperation movement against discrimination battled over a contentious job quota scheme.
In order to protect public safety, the administration decided to create a three-day general vacation, which begins today. Along with the deaths, hundreds of people have reportedly been hurt in conflicts, shootings, and counterattacks across the nation. According to the local media, fourteen police personnel have died, thirteen of them at the Enayetpur police station in Sirajganj and one at Elliotganj, Comilla.
